Making Wellbeing A Priority: CCS Wellness Fair 2017

On Thursday, March 16, dozens of newcomers spent a few hours at the CCS Wellness Fair 2017 hosted at the CCS Brampton location learning about various health and wellness services available in the community. Health practitioners and wellness professionals from various disciplines ranging from massage, acupuncture, holistic nutrition and iridology, yoga and aromatherapy were on hand to introduce their services and draw focus on the importance of wellness and self-care. The project is funded by United Way Peel Region.

Keynote speaker Maninder Dhillon, a Certified & Yoga and Meditation Teacher from Art of Living, Brampton encouraged participants to take responsibility for their own body, mind and health. “Moving to a new country is one of the most stressful events of our lives. We are totally uprooted and planted somewhere else. Just like an uprooted plant, it takes time to recover, put down roots and start to flourish again. It is important that newcomers seek out agencies like CCS who are here to help.”

In the words of an attendee: “I am alone here with my husband and we don’t have anyone to turn to. We are thinking negative things and I like that this information will help us be more positive. We definitely need some support.”

“What we do as an agency is defined by our client needs,” says CCS Staff Thakur Lamsal. “I find that most of the clients I work with are really struggling to find information about health and wellness services that are available in the community, especially when they are new. With the Wellness Fair, we hope to educate the clients about the available services, where to find them and help them make connections.”

An Employer Connections Fair was also hosted at the same venue to connect newcomers with local employers and possible job leads, help them tap into possible job leads and offer insight into Canadian hiring practices and tips to aid them in their job search.
